About uploading photographs on our site:
The easiest way to get your pictures onto our site is to upload them during the property listing
submission process, and most people will choose this method. As a convenience to those who do
not have the necessary jpg files as produced by a digital camera or by scanning regular
photographs, we can scan pictures supplied by you via post,
if necessary. There are a few considerations when working with online graphics files:
Graphics files for the internet can be any of several file formats including jpg, bmp, gif, and png.
Digital photographic images such as those produced by digital cameras and scanners
are almost exclusively jpg's and this is the required format for all pictures uploaded to this site.
Small filesizes are very desirable for online photographs for two reasons. One is to speed
the download time of a webpage, especially for those using dialup modems, and secondly, we
need to make sure the picture will fit on the page.
There are two main factors which determine
the filesize of a jpg picture: The size of the picture (usually measured in pixels),
and the degree of file compression used in saving the file.
Pictures taken with digital cameras
and scanned photographs are usually much larger than required for uploading to our website.
Therefore, they need to be resized using a graphics program such as the ones that come
with virtually all digital cameras and scanners. Read the instructions for your graphics software
about how to resize your photos and save
them as if you were getting them ready for email.
After resizing, you can sometimes adjust
the compression level used to save the photo. Higher compression makes smaller file sizes at
some cost in the clarity of the picture. The default compression setting is usually fine.
Experiment before sending and try to achieve as small a filesize as you can
while retaining clarity and a reasonable size (around 400 pixels wide is about right).
Our site automatically presents photos at a maximum size of 500 pixels in the
horizontal and vertical directions. If you upload a photo larger than that, it will be
automatically reduced in pixel size by the program during presentation on the website
at some detriment to its quality even though
the filesize in bytes, and the corresponding download time, is not reduced. This presents
a lose/lose situation and should be avoided by processing all photos before uploading.
All photos uploaded to All French Services should be
processed with these considerations in mind and if you have any questions, please contact us.
